AO1 - assessment of information sources

Personal Accounts

I felt that what Brian did was very brave and courageous by saving Stanley, because he could have just left him and saved himself, but instead he saved Stanley. You could feel their emotional when they were saying about the plane hurling towards the tower. Also when they were saying about how much they wanted a brother and that they had found one (being each other).

Then they worked together and got out of the building, and started speaking to each other for 45 minutes before the building collapsed and they split up.
Films
Saving Private Ryan

Tom Hanks and Matt Damon.

This film is based on a true story from world war II, D-Day. The film is about a small group of soldiers who are sent on a mission across France to find a solider named Private Ryan hence the film title. They are sent on this mission because all 3 of private Ryan's brothers were killed in conflict and it wasn't fair on the brother and the mother that all 4 of her sons her killed.

Strengths

The film is based on a true story.
The film is easy to access (via: Internet, cinema and DVD) and its cheap because the film has been around for a while.
Gives viewers watching the film an idea of what its like being there.

Weaknesses

Could be misleading due to 'Artisic Licence'to make it more entertaining.
Some viewers could find it distressing as there is a lot of blood and guts, also it is based on a true story.

Personal Accounts

Personal Accounts are witnesses from an actual event. So they would give their account of what happened by speaking on the radio, publishing it in a newspaper etc, so a good example would be a WWII veteran solider explaining his view on events. So the strengths of this could be him giving us a feeling of what it was like to be there fighting in WWII. A weakness could be that because hes old and may have memory loss so it might not be as accurate then it could be.

Strengths

More likely to be accurate, rather than some journalist making a story up in the paper.
Emotional - empathy - Give an idea of what it was like to be in that situation.

Weaknesses

No video or photographic evidence like in a documentary.
They could be exaggerating more than what actually happened.

Evaluation
Personal accounts are a good way of finding out the truth from a person who was actually there at that certain point, but some people in personal accounts may over react and say things that may not of happened because they get caught up in the moment or they want to make it sound more interesting.

Documentaries

Documentaries are based on true stories that actually happened or is happening........ they are shown on TV, the Internet and you can by some on DVD. So they are fairly easy to access, also there are documentary channels on Sky. Documentaries show real life action like in Afghanistan, you can hear the soldiers talking about what they are doing and their feelings, but some of the action is restricted and has to be cut. Because terrorists could go online and view these documentaries and see what the British army are doing, tactics etc.

Strengths

You can see what it was like or is like in that certain documentary.
Video evidence.
While the video is running which could be from the warfare or time, people in that situation speak and talk about their experiences and what is actually happening.

Weaknesses

They might be playing up to the camera, not being serious.......

Evaluation
Documentaries are a great source of getting information, sometimes it will show clips of what happened or what is happening so it gives you an idea of what it is like. Or they might do a reconstruction which is re-making what happened because they have no video of the event just by what people are saying.

Forensic Science

Forensic science is a great way to find evidence to convict a criminal for a serious offence. There are many ways of forensic science. They can use almost every part of an human body to find DNA, if police found remains of a human skeleton and couldn't identify the victim, then they would send the skeleton to forensic team and they can identify that person by looking at their dental history from their teeth. Also skin, finger/toe nails, Sylvia, sperm, hair and more. They can use all of these things to convict a killer, rapist etc and to identify a human body.

They can also find out how the victim was killed by different types of bruising, whether they were struck with a hammer, punched, barge pole, baseball bat, cricket bat etc, which hand the weapon was in when the victim was struck.

The forensic science team can also be at the crime scene, but nothing can be touched or moved because that could conflict with the evidence. They would search around for a struggle, DNA, a weapon etc.

Strengths
Convicting murderers, rapist etc.
Convicting criminals from the past (cold cases), before forensic science.

Weaknesses
Could lead to conflicting the wrong person. Because they may have been with that person just before they were murdered, so their Sylvia, fingerprints etc could be on the body.
There are only 38 forensic teams in the UK.

Evaluation
Forensic science is a good way of finding evidence to convict the murderer, rapist etc. But it costs alot of money for the research, but its worth it i think.
CD-Rom

A CD-Rom is a little square like chip which you insert into your computer. Once the chip is in the computer a source of some kind will pop up and you can look through the information which would have been reliable at the time it came out. You can get many different types of CD-Roms, from information all the way to games. The CD-Rom may only be useful for a year because different types of information change of years, so it wont be reliable after that.

Strengths
Storage access
Specialist info
Easier to find then book etc
Factually reliable at the time exploration

Weaknesses
Limited info
Cant be updated
Inaccurate/unreliable potentially
Lost/broken
Cost to by new

Evaulation
CD rom's are out of date now because there are pen drives and memory cards which you can put into your computer now, they are much smaller and can be carried on your key ring. They are a good source for carrying data

Internet

The Internet is a great way of finding out information, whether its history all the way through to now. There are so many reliable sources on the Internet, but there are also so many unreliable sources such as http://www.wikipedia.org/, but some of the information on this website are reliable. You can also come data with other websites or information to find out what is better.
Strengths

Updated
Current Reaction
Vast range of sources
Official Regulations
Compare data

Weaknesses

Potentially factually unreliable
Aware source
Vast range of sources
Regulation
Bias in search results

Evaluation
The Internet is probably the best way of finding any information, you can watch documentaries on websites (BBC iplayer, ITV player, 4OD etc) Watch films from websites (Lovefilm, Netflix etc).

Official Records

Official Records is someones medical, dental file etc, where you cant find out things about them. Where they live, next of kin, medical history etc. But some official records are really hard to gain access to, such as the look in to Osama Bin Laden's death. The soldiers who were there when he was killed had to sign a confidentiality form, where they could not say how he died to anyone or they would get punished.

Strengths
Access to people files incase of emergencies.
Very reliable.

Weaknesses
Some Official Records are hard to gain access too.
Sometimes you have to pay to gain access.

Evaluation
Official records are really difficult to get hold of, but once you get hold of them you can exploit that person. That's why they are confidential.

Photographs

Photographs are a good way of finding someone, evidence and a good way of looking at history. If someone has committed crime and the police know who it is but cant find them, then they may issue a photograph of the person on posters or sometimes the local news. It may have a phone number underneath and a message saying do not approach this person because they are dangerous. Sometimes there may be a cash reward if the person is found, you see this on programmes such as Watchdog etc.

Strengths
See the emotions of people.
Someone may have taken a picture of their family and someone was being robbed in the background.
Good source of finding out history WW2 etc.
Can help find a missing person.
Convict criminals.

Weaknesses
Might be miss directed. Someone could look like they are doing something wrong in the photo but actually they are not.

Evaluation
Photographs are a good source of finding information, throughout history WW2 etc, also a good way of finding a missing person. But pictures can also be misleading, it may look like someone is doing something wrong in the photo when they actually are not.

Paintings and Drawings

The police may use paintings and drawings to help convict a criminal. If a woman had been raped and didn't know who her attacker was, then a specialist person within the police force will ask certain questions like what colour hair did he have? How long was his hair? etc. Eventually you would get a drawing of a person and the police can then look through their files and see if they have a man matching his description. But if they didn't, then the drawing may go out to the public for people to look out for that person.

Strengths
Can help to convict criminals.
Can save other people, they may have a picture of that person in their head and then they may see that person and know not approach them.

Weaknesses
May lead to the wrong conviction of someone, because the drawing may look like them and it wasn't them.
The person may in the drawing may have changed such as got a hair cut, shaved  etc.

Evaluation
Paintings and drawings are good way to convict a criminal but it may lead to the wrong conviction because the drawing may not be detailed enough.
